UKMTO reports tanker explosion causing oil to spill
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) received a report on 4 March of an incident approximately 30 nautical miles southeast of Mubarak Al Kabeer, Kuwait.
The master of a tanker at anchor reported witnessing and hearing a large explosion on the vessel’s port side, after which a small craft was seen leaving the vicinity. Oil has been observed in the water leaking from a cargo tank, which could have potential environmental impacts. The vessel has also taken on water.
No fires have been reported and the crew are safe and accounted for. Authorities are currently investigating the incident. Meanwhile, Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior has denied reports that the incident occurred within the country’s territorial waters, noting that the location was more than 60 km from Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port.
Vessels in the area are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.
