The Panama Canal said it does not expect transit restrictions through the end of 2026 despite monitoring the potential impact of El Niño conditions.

Since late 2025, the canal authority has been closely monitoring climate conditions and maintaining historically high water levels at Gatún Lake to prepare for possible drought risks linked to El Niño.

The canal said it also implemented water-saving measures at the locks and benefited from one of the wettest dry seasons recorded since 1950 to strengthen water reserves in Gatún and Alhajuela lakes.

The authority currently continues normal operations with 38 daily transits and updates lake-level projections every week.

According to the canal, stronger impacts from moderate or severe El Niño events usually appear in the following year. The authority has already started preparing operational projections for 2027.

The canal highlighted the strategic importance of water management, noting that both canal operations and water supply for more than half of Panama’s population depend on the same resources.

To reduce water consumption, the Panama Canal activated several preventive measures in late 2025. These include simultaneous lockages for smaller vessels, use of water-saving basins at the Neopanamax locks, interior gate operations and the temporary suspension of hydroelectric generation at Gatún.

The canal also highlighted the importance of the Río Indio Project, which aims to increase water storage capacity and strengthen long-term resilience against droughts and climate variability.
