Wärtsilä will invest around EUR 140 million to expand production capacity by 35% at its Sustainable Technology Hub (STH) in Vaasa, Finland

Wärtsilä will invest around EUR 140 million to expand production capacity by 35% at its Sustainable Technology Hub (STH) in Vaasa, Finland, and across its global supply chain.

The expansion will strengthen Wärtsilä’s industrial capacity and support rising demand in both the energy and marine markets. It will enable the company to deliver a higher volume of engines and improve long-term customer support.

The new capacity will be installed as part of the existing STH expansion announced in April 2025. Wärtsilä expects to commission the additional production lines in Q1 2028.

Meeting global demand

Wärtsilä said global demand for reliable power continues to grow as industries electrify, data centres expand, and cooling needs increase due to climate change. At the same time, many regions are renewing ageing power infrastructure and integrating more renewable energy.

In the marine sector, shipowners are prioritising fuel efficiency and fuel flexibility to meet regulatory requirements and remain competitive.

Håkan Agnevall, President and CEO of Wärtsilä, said the investment strengthens Wärtsilä’s readiness for growth.

The company aims to support customers with flexible and efficient engine technologies while advancing decarbonisation in both industries.

Sustainable Technology Hub

The Sustainable Technology Hub opened in 2022 and covers 90,000 square metres. It employs more than 2,000 people and serves as Wärtsilä’s main centre for manufacturing, innovation and collaboration.

All Wärtsilä engine types are produced at the site. The hub also includes a training centre and a remote monitoring centre serving customers worldwide.

Since 2018, Wärtsilä has invested more than EUR 400 million in the Vaasa hub. The company is currently building an additional office facility to bring all 3,800 Vaasa-based employees to the site by mid-2026.

Carbon-neutral operations

STH plays a key role in Wärtsilä’s target to achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2030.

The facility generates its own electricity and heat. It feeds surplus power into the grid and stores waste heat from engine testing in thermal energy systems to heat the site efficiently.
